Integrity is adherence to moral and ethical principles. Other words for integrity include character, decency, principle, honor, and honesty. A young girl once asked her dad if he had ever lied. Her dad said well it wouldn’t be true to say I’ve never lied. Then the girl asked about her mother and if she had ever lied. Dad responded, well yes when she felt that the truth would hurt someone. The girl said, “Dad, you know, it must be terribly lonesome up in Heaven – with nobody there but God and George Washington“.
Integrity is important in society today as legal systems struggle with interpretation and enforcement of laws. The medical field is constantly facing dilemmas with new advances of technology; trying to find a balance between pursuing new cures for diseases and ethical issues that come up as they pursue these cures. It takes leaders with integrity to solve these tough issues.
When my daughter was younger, I remember a day at her school where all the fathers would come up to the school to fly kites with their child in the play area near the school. We set out to fly our kite but it just wouldn’t fly. It was a great day for kite flying; the wind was perfect and the other Dads where doing great. Then I looked at the kite and noticed it did not have the cross stick that holds the wings straight. I had to go home and retrieve the cross stick. Once it was put in place, there was no problem.
In the Bible, there is a reading in 2 Chronicles 19 where Jehoshaphat reformed the system of justice as he appointed judges of integrity. Like the cross stick to a kite, integrity provides a way to keep all sides together and enables the power of the Holy Spirit just like the wind to lift all things to amazing new heights.
There are many other examples we can find in the Bible that help explain about the importance of integrity. For building integrity in God’s power, there is an on-line devotional I’m using to keep me on track. I invite you to join the journey or check in from time to time for some inspiration. Pingback: Lessons of Integrity | This Day With God
An excellent post on integrity. How important it is to a Christian way of Life. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you Altruistico. Let us pray for learning and applying the lessons about integrity God gives us in the Bible.
I agree; we should be praying for the knowledge of integrity and the power to daily apply it in our lives. Doing so as a “light unto the world” so others can see Christ living through us.”
Too, praying that integrity be restored unto our nation and it’s leaders. That God will deliver us from all unrighteousness.
Mark, thank you for dropping by and leaving your comment. You know they are always welcome. And, please, call me Michael.
May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless and keep you and yours always. Shalom to my brother in Christ Jesus.
A timely topic to pick up and share with us Mark. While we understand that the ability to be a people of integrity is something God grants, we also know that it is by intentional effort on our part this happens. How we morally and ethically walk is a direct reflection of how our relationship is going with God. Looking forward to your studies made available to us good friend.
Some great points – thanks for sharing.
